First Death Registered in the Northern Territory
The first entry in what is now described as the Northern Territory Register of Deaths was made on 25 March 1871 by the Registrar, J. Stokes-Millner. Palmerston was a registering district of South Australia at the time. The death relates to a William Read, Mariner of South Australia who died on 17 December 1870 at Roper River. The cause of death is recorded as "Drowning, dragged overboard from a boat by an alligator".
