On 24 February 2009 Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Tony Fitzgerald passed away at his home surrounded by family and friends, Fitzy leaves behind his sisters Shane and Sally, his beloved children Gus and Nina, and a huge group friends and colleagues. Fitzy also leaves the Territory a better place thanks to his relentless pursuit of human rights for all Territorians since arriving in the top end as a young Aboriginal Legal Aid lawyer in 1978. As Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Fitzy was passionate, fearless, outspoken, and fiercely independent! He strongly believed that elimination of discrimination is a goal that the Commission must work towards tirelessly, but that ultimately the NT community must step up and take on responsibility for the creation of a discrimination free NT. That is the challenge he has left us with.
The staff of the Commission wish to thank all those who have offered us their condolences and support. We continue to be inspired by Tony's passion and commitment.
