An apprenticeship combines employment with structured learning to develop workplace skills and provide a nationally recognised qualification at the certificate II, III, IV or diploma level.
Eligibility
Applicants must be an Australian citizen, hold permanent Australian resident status or an appropriate visa, be at least 15 years of age (at date of commencement) and have completed year 10 if born after 01 January 1995.
Salary conditions
Apprentices are employed on a temporary basis for one to four years, dependent on their qualification. Salaries range from $13 809 - $29 182 per annum for the first year of the Apprenticeship dependent on the highest school level completed, year of completion, duration and level of qualification being undertaken.
NTPS employees are entitled to six weeks annual leave and flexible workplace arrangements can be negotiated.
Types of jobs available
There are opportunities in a range of fields from business and computing to health and tourism in remote, regional and urban locations.
On-and-off the job training
Apprentices are employed by a Northern Territory Government department (also known as an 'agency') and will receive relevant on-the-job training from their agency for the duration of the apprenticeship.
Apprentices also receive structured off-the-job training from a registered training organisation. The type and location of the apprenticeship will determine the method of training provided, but could include workbooks, assignments, block training and local or interstate delivery.
How to apply
Apprenticeships are advertised in approximately June and October each year in newspapers throughout the Northern Territory and on the internet at http://www.nt.gov.au/jobs
Once advertised, download the application form or contact the number on the advertisement for more information. Only applications submitted on the official application form will be accepted. More information will become available closer to the intake period.

Where can the apprenticeship take me?
The Northern Territory Government is the largest employer in the Territory and offers a diverse range of employment opportunities on completion of an apprenticeship.
Apprentices are employed on a temporary basis for the duration of their apprenticeship and have a distinct advantage in applying for permanent government jobs, having gained relevant hands-on experience. Apprentices also have access to employment programs that will prepare them for future employment opportunities in government.
Apprentices are encouraged to actively plan their own career path using the skills, knowledge and experience gained through their apprenticeship.
On successful completion, apprentices may also have the opportunity to further their studies in their chosen field at a higher level.
