Asbestos Management

Overview

The Australian and Northern Territory Governments are committed to addressing community concerns about asbestos. As part of the Community Cleanup Program implemented under the Northern Territory National Emergency Response (NTNER), the Australian Government engaged specialists to undertake asbestos surveys of the 73 NTNER communities to identify the locations and condition of Asbestos Containing Material.

The Australian Government then committed funds to an Asbestos Management Project for the 73 NTNER communities. In early May 2009, the Northern Territory Government committed to participating in the project with the Australian Government to manage asbestos in affected communities.
Project activities include:

  • Asbestos surveys to assist in identifying and recording the locations of Asbestos Containing Material;
  • Removal and disposal of Asbestos Containing Material which has the potential to pose a risk in the near future;
  • Where Asbestos Containing Material remains in a building, and with the approval of those responsible for the management of these buildings, erect signage warning of the presence of Asbestos Containing Material;
  • The Northern Territory Government to establish, coordinate and maintain an Asbestos Register for all assets in the 73 NTNER communities.
