Asbestos Management
Overview
The Australian and Northern Territory Governments are committed to addressing community concerns about asbestos.
As part of the Community Cleanup Program implemented under the Northern Territory Emergency Response (NTER), the Australian Government engaged specialists to undertake asbestos surveys of the 73 NTER communities to identify the locations and condition of asbestos containing material (ACM).
The Australian Government then committed funds to an Asbestos Management Project for the 73 NTER communities. In early May 2009, the Northern Territory Government (NTG) committed to participating in the project with the Australian Government to manage asbestos in affected communities.
Project activities:
- Asbestos surveys to assist in identifying and recording the locations of ACM and the development of asbestos registers
- Removal and disposal of ACM which has the potential to pose a risk in the near future
- Where ACM remains in a building, and with the approval of those responsible for the management of these buildings, place asbestos signage
- The NTG to establish, coordinate and maintain an ACM register for all assets in the 73 NTER communities
