Umbakumba Road
Overview
The sealing of 48km of Umbakumba Road is part of a Regional Partnership Agreement between Anindilyakwa Land Council, the Australian and Territory Governments, East Arnhem Shire Council and the Groote Eylandt Mining Company.
The end result will be a two lane sealed road, improved access for residents of the communities and increased flood immunity during the wet season.
A white rock quarry has been set up by GEBIE Civil and Construction, working in conjunction with the local community, approximately 6km outside of Angurugu to crush sealing aggregates for the road.
This opportunity is a direct involvement of a local enterprise into the project, and potentially offers longer term sustainable works for supplying GEMCO and others with quarry products.
Costs
The project budget is $20M of which $9.5M will come from the Australian Government’s Aboriginal Benefits Account (ABA), $5M from GEBIE and $5.5M from the Northern Territory Government.
