The Tiger Brennan Drive Extension project is the largest and most significant section of the $127 million East Arm Port Access Route being funded by the Australian and Northern Territory Governments to improve traffic flow to East Arm Port and Palmerston..
Benefits
- Relieve pressure on other arterial roads in the Darwin urban area, including the Stuart Highway
- Improve access to the East Arm Port
- Ease traffic congestion
- Improve safety and reduce travelling times between Darwin and Palmerston
- Reduce traffic delays for about 34,000 vehicles per day
Contractors
Stage One of the project, the $6.5 million Berrimah Road Duplication, was awarded in January 2008 and has been completed by Macmahon.
Macmahon Contractors was awarded the contract for Stage Two with key partners Sinclair Knight Mertz (design consultant) and the Larrakia Development Corporation.
Stage Three, the Berrimah Road-Rail Overpass from Wishart Road to the weighbridge on Berrimah Road was also awarded to Macmahon.

From Friday 21 October, all Berrimah Road outbound traffic will be detoured over the new Railway Overpass. Direct access to the public weighbridge is still
available. Inbound traffic will be unaffected at this stage.

- 22 August 2011 - Overpass simplifies access to Darwin Port
Construction of the $17 million Berrimah Road – Rail Overpass, Stage 3 of Darwin's multi-million dollar Tiger Brennan Drive project, is underway. Read the Australian Main Roads (pdf) article for more information. - 27 May 2011 - Berrimah Road Railway Overpass - Traffic Detour
From Wednesday 1 June, all Berrimah Road traffic travelling (both inbound and outbound) between Wishart Road and the public weighbridge will be diverted to the new bypass detour.
A 50kmh speed limit will be in place and a new signalised railway crossing (with barriers) will be operating.

Stage 1: Duplication Berrimah Road, Tiger Brennan Drive and Wishart Road
Stage One of the project was completed in early 2009. Stage One included duplication of lanes on Berrimah Road between Tiger Brennan Drive and Wishart Road and creating dual turning lanes to ease congestion.
Stage 2: Extension Tiger Brennan Drive, Stuart Highway and Interchange
Stage Two was completed in December 2010 and saw the construction of 7.5km of road works – including a four lane dual highway – to extend Tiger Brennan Drive from Berrimah Road to the Stuart Highway.
Stage Two also involved the construction of two much anticipated overpasses at the Stuart Highway and Roystonea Avenue intersection - with pedestrian access across the Stuart Highway to be included.
