Stuart Highway/Howard Springs Road/Lambrick Road intersection upgrade
Including the duplication of Howard Springs Road to Whitewood Road
Overview
The intersection of Stuart Highway/Howard Springs Road/Lambrick Avenue is a highly utilised road used by local residents in Howard Springs, Howard River Park, Gunn Point (recreational users) and local Indigenous communities.
Howard Springs Road also services the Litchfield Shire Council’s Waste Transfer Station, the Darwin Correctional Precinct (currently under construction), the Ichthys Accommodation Village (INPEX), Howard Springs Nature Park, Howard Springs Village as well as schools and other businesses.
The $12 million project is funded jointly by Northern Territory and Australian Governments.
Location
Stuart Highway/Howard Springs Road and the Stuart Highway/Lambrick Avenue intersection and Howard Springs Road to Whitewood Road.
Benefits
Commencing mid August 2012, the project will include:
- Upgrading of the intersection at Howard Springs Road and Stuart Highway
- Construction of new traffic and merging lanes
- Duplication of Howard Springs Road from Stuart Highway to Whitewood Road
- Construction of a new access road to the Waste Transfer Station
- Relocation of essential services infrastructure (power and water)
- Realignment of access to rural residential (AAAA Road); and
- The project will provide improved capacity on our roads, catering for future growth
The Waste Transfer Station will remain open during the works with a new access road being constructed as part of the project (see map) (pdf).
Works will take place during both daylight hours and at night, seven days per week.
To minimise traffic impact, construction activity will generally take place away from the main intersection and Stuart Highway between peak traffic hours (7am to 9am and 3.30pm to 5.30pm).
Outside of peak hours, traffic management will be operating with lane closures and speed restrictions in place.
In the interests of road safety, a temporary speed limit of 80km/h is now in place from the Palmerston Indigenous Village Bus Stop to the De Caen Close on the Stuart Highway.
