Edith River Bridge re-opens

18 January 2012

The Edith River high-level bridge, north of Katherine on the Stuart Highway, will re-open to vehicle traffic today at approximately 1.30pm.

The Edith River was subject to an extreme flooding event in late December 2011 caused by Tropical Cyclone Grant.

Regional Director Katherine Mr Paul Flanagan said that huge volumes of water had washed through the area and the Edith River high-level bridge was badly damaged.

“Repairs required to the bridge were substantial and crews have been working very hard to repair the bridge as quickly as possible and re-open it to vehicle traffic,” he said.

Speed restrictions will be in place for both the high-level and low-level bridge until repairs to the railway line are complete.

Motorists are urged to drive through the area with care and observe all signs.

Know before you go

18 January 2012

Heading out and about this Wet Season?

The Territory Government manages an extensive road network of some 22 000 kilometres across the Territory and sometimes we close roads.

This is to ensure that damage is minimised and for the safety of motorists.

If you or your friends are planning a weekend away, check the road report before you go at www.roadreport.nt.gov.au or use the freecall number 1800 246 199 to be sure which roads are accessible.

Motorists who drive on closed roads are subject to hefty fines.

Daly River Bridge - changes to river conditions

03 January 2012

Daly River users need to take special care around the location of the new Daly River Bridge.

Due to the current height of the Daly, the hazard markers warning river users to avoid the construction area have been submerged.

All river users need to be aware of the potential underwater hazards caused by these piles.
