Save energy: use plug-in timers

Reduce unnecessary energy use by placing plug in timers on office equipment and small appliances!

Plug-in timers can be used to turn equipment off overnight and on weekends, saving energy and money used while running equipment unnecessarily. Multiple pieces of equipment attached to a single timer, through a power board, increases the timer's cost effectiveness.

The suggested on/off cycle for the timers is:

ON: 7am and
OFF: 7pm Monday to Friday
OFF: 11pm Friday
OFF: 7pm Saturday
OFF: 11 pm Saturday
OFF: 7pm Sunday
OFF: 11pm Sunday

Push the over ride button to use equipment after hours
Push the over ride button again when finished

Pushing the over ride button when finished after hours work makes sure the timer runs to the programmed cycle.

Different offices may have different operating needs, so it is crucial that people in each area or office are consulted before the installation of the timers. There are a number of steps that, when carried out, should ensure successful introduction of the timers. These are:

  • Consult and inform staff of timer implementation
  • Ensure timers are obvious, accessible, and that operating instructions are visible
  • Inform staff of:
    • Location of devices
    • Use of the over-ride button after hours
    • Sending jobs to the printer queue when the printer is ON
    • Financial and environmental benefits of installing timers
