How to activate Energy Star functions on your computer
The following instructions are guidelines only. If you have Energy Star functions on your computer, but are having difficulty activating them (or appear to be locked out of these functions) contact your IT section for assistance.

For computers operating Windows 95
- Click on the Start menu.
- Select Settings - Control Panel.
- Open Display properties.
- Select the Screensaver tab.
- Activate either "Low power stand by" or "Monitor shut down" by checking the boxes.
- Set times for activation (recommended times are 15 minutes for Low Power Stand By and 20 minutes for Monitor Shut Down). If you would like to have a Screensaver come on (for example to use the password function), it is recommended that you activate it at either 5 or 10 minutes. These times can be adjusted to suit your personal needs.
- If the Energy Star features are greyed out - select the Settings tab in the Display Properties box.
- Click on Advanced Properties.
- Select the Monitor tab.
- Ensure that the "Monitor is Energy Star compliant" box is checked before going back to step 4.
For computers operating Windows 98
- Click on the Start menu.
- Select Settings - Control Panel.
- Select Power Management.
- Selecting the Power Management scheme that matches your computer's role (e.g. Home/Office Desk) will automatically set standard Energy Star activation times. If these times do not suit your needs, you are able to customise your settings.
- Additional settings can be accessed through the Advanced tab however, these settings will vary according to the capabilities of your computer.
- The Power Management functions can also be accessed through the Display Properties dialogue box. Click on Settings in the Energy Saving features of monitor section. Go to step 4 to set your times.
For computers operating Windows NT
Energy Star functions are not yet available in Windows NT
For Macintosh computers
- Click on the Apple menu.
- Select Control Panel.
- Select Screen.
- Activate EPA Energy Star Shut Down.
For computers operationg Windows XP
- Click on the Start menu
- Select Settings – Control Panel
- Select Power Options
- Select the Power Scheme that matches your computers role (eg Home/Office Desk) will automatically set standard Energy Star activation times. If these times do not suit your needs, you are able to customise your settings
- Additional settings can be accessed through the Advanced tab however, these settings will vary according to the capabilities of your computer
- The Power Options functions can also be accessed through the Display Properties dialogue box. Monitor Power options are accessed via the Screen Saver tab. Go to Step 4 to set your times.
