Impact of Violence on Young Australians

Are you aged between 12 to 24 years and have experienced physical violence, directly or indirectly, or know someone who has? Do you have a view on youth violence in your neighbourhood, town or city?

The Australian Parliament is holding an inquiry into the impact of violence on young Australians, and would really like to hear your views. What they mean by violence is the sort of violence that’s physical and is more likely to happen out on the street or in a public place.

NT Young Achiever Awards - NOMINATIONS OPEN

The time has come again for the youth of our communities to be recognised in this year’s Northern Territory Young Achiever Awards.

The Minister for Young Territorians, The Hon Gerry McCarthy MLA passes this message to all territorians:

"Across the Northern Territory young people from different social and cultural backgrounds, beliefs, interests, values and aspirations are making exceptional contributions to their communities.

The Young Achiever Awards is about recognising such achievements while engaging the community to nominate and acknowledge young Territorians who are striving to make a difference.

As a proud sponsor of the 2010 NT Young Achiever Awards, the Northern Territory Government encourages you to nominate outstanding young Territorians for one or more of the nine Young Achiever Award categories. I wish all young Territorians the very best success with their endeavours."

The NT Young Achiever Awards are now calling for nominations in the following nine categories:

The winners will be announced at the Gala Presentation evening on 10 April 2010 in Darwin. Each nominee gets a chance to win $2,000 thanks to TIO and go into the running to be the ultimate “Channel Nine Young Achiever of the Year” winner who will receive an additional $2,000.

Kids Helpline Launch New Website

Kids Helpline has launched its new website at www.kidshelp.com.au. The new site offers a safe, fun and interactive place for kids and young people to explore issues that are important to them.

A new 'Grownups' section of the website has been developed with the broader community in mind. This area aims to address the needs of parents, teachers, service providers, media and researchers.

There is also a new discussion forum "Kids Helpline moderated discussion forum aimed at 13-25 year olds. Click on link or heading above to check it out!

A Privacy Survival Guide for Young People

To help young people make informed decisions about their privacy, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner has produced private i, a privacy survival guide.

private i covers the privacy issues you may face such as: online social networking, identity theft, the scanning of ID documents at pubs and clubs, ‘blacklists', online shopping, dealing with telemarketers, and responding to requests for personal information. It also discusses the pitfalls to avoid, and where to get help if your privacy has been affected.

Round Table Community-based projects

Community-based projects by the 2008 Youth Minister's Round Table for Young Territorians (Round Table) are now publicaly available.

National Youth Participation Strategy in Mental Health Scoping Project Report

The need for young people’s voices in the development and implementation of programs under the National Mental Health Strategy and National Suicide Prevention Strategy was identified after national consultations in late 2002 and early 2003. Consultations highlighted the longstanding inadequacies of policy developers to incorporate the voice of young people into policies and their ability to access information and feedback from Australia’s children and young people.

Check out the Office of Youth Affairs' Little Event Guide and Checklist. It's gives you some hints and tips about event planning and management and provides a checklist to make sure all those events you're thinking about go off like a Territory Day cracker!

Whether they are big or small, all events need good planning and management and the OYA Little Event Guide and Checklist will get you on the right track. The package also includes an example project plan and budget, plus some really great websites are listed for further research and info.

Introducing a handbook for young Territorians

The Office of Youth Affairs is pleased to introduce You did what? How young Territorians can make things happen in the community. The handbook is filled with over 20 big ideas for young people on how to take action on issues they feel strongly about. Click here for a copy of the handbook.
