Housing

Territory Housing, within the Department of Local Government and Housing, provides young people aged 16 and over with public housing and housing assistance. In recognition of the difficulties that young people may experience in accessing and maintaining housing, support is also provided for specific youth projects, usually through community organisations.

Territory Housing is trialling the following two youth initiatives:

  • The Youth Transitional Housing Project through Anglicare; and
  • A Youth Headleasing Project with community agencies under the auspices of NT Shelter.

The Youth Transitional Housing Project started in 2002 to improve the sustainability of tenancies for young people moving from crisis accommodation to public housing.

The Youth Headleasing Project is designed to improve the independent living skills of young people in supported accommodation that reverts to mainstream public housing after an initial support period. The support agency then receives another public housing property for another young person that may be experiencing housing difficulties and/or homelessness or seeking to move from crisis or Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) funded accommodation.

Territory Housing has an ongoing commitment to assist non-government agencies to provide youth housing services looking at initiatives such as share housing and headleasing programs.
