National Youth Week

NYW is an annual event ALL about young people that is held around April each year in every Australian state and territory. In the Territory it’s become our biggest youth celebration where young people get involved, have fun and participate in heaps of events and activities.

In 2009 the celebrations commenced with the official launch at the Young Achiever Awards on Saturday 28 March. Over the course of the week Opening and Closing Celebrations with the support of beyondblue: the national depression initiative, were held in Alice Springs, Darwin, Palmerston, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Katherine.

During the seven day celebration of young people, over 90 activities and events were held across the Territory giving young people the opportunity to express ideas, raise concerns and act on issues important to them and encourage the community to take notice of young people and celebrate the positive contribution they make.

NYW 2010 will be from 10 – 18 April and the theme for the celebrations will be ‘Live it Now’.

The Territory's National Youth Week Young Member

Larnie McClintock, 22, is the Territory's ambassador for NYW 2010 and is a member of the National Planning Group. Larnie is an active member in her community and enjoys making a difference. She is also the 2009 Vice-Chair of the Youth Minister's Round Table for Young Territorians and a graduate within the Northern Territory Treasury.

The role of the young member is to make sure there is a youth perspective in the planning of NYW across the country.

NYW Regional Coordination Committees

Through the Youth Engagement Grants Program, funding is available to establish NYW Regional Coordination Committees. The committees enhance the level of involvement of young people in the planning and organisating of local activities. This initiative makes sure that young Territorians are involved in the planning and running of activities that they're interested in!

How can I get involved in Youth Week?

  • Hosting your own event is a great way to be involved. There are no registration costs to become an official event organiser. All you need to do is cover the costs of running an event and register the event with the Office of Youth Affairs.
