NAIDOC Week 2009NAIDOC stands for the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. Today, NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields. Activities will take place across the nation during NAIDOC Week from 5-12 July 2009. All Australians are encouraged to participate. The event will bring together 50 young people from around the country, each with diverse interests, experiences and passions. Through a range of workshops, participants will explore their vision for change, learn valuable skills and form a powerful network to help them along their individual path of change. National Youth Participation Strategy in Mental Health Scoping Project ReportThe need for young people’s voices in the development and implementation of programs under the National Mental Health Strategy and National Suicide Prevention Strategy was identified after national consultations in late 2002 and early 2003. Consultations highlighted the longstanding inadequacies of policy developers to incorporate the voice of young people into policies and their ability to access information and feedback from Australia’s children and young people. Building a Better Future Progress ReportBuilding a Better Future for Young Territorians sets out the Northern Territory Government’s vision for the delivery of programs and services to young Territorians aged 12 to 25 years. The Office of Youth Affairs in the Department of Health and Families is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the framework, including the coordination of an annual progress report to the community. The 2007-08 Progress Report is the fifth report to be released. It reports on Government’s key youth initiatives where significant progress has been made since the release of the fourth report in 2007 and on new youth initiatives.
