The Department of Health and Community Services invites nominations each year for the NT Nursing and Midwifery Awards to recognise Northern Territory nurses and midwives for their professional commitment and contribution to health outcomes, and to encourage excellence.

The success of the inaugural 2004 NT Nursing and Midwifery Awards prompted an annual commitment to the event. The Awards are becoming an important date on the calendar for nurses, midwives and the general public and planning is now underway for 2006 which will be held again on International Nurses Day, Friday 12 May 2006 - WATCH THIS SPACE!

In early 2006 the Department of Health and Community Services will invite nominations of nurses and midwives in the following categories:

  • Acute Care
  • Aged Care & General Practice
  • Community
  • Mental Health
  • Midwifery
  • Remote

New in 2006 will be the:

  • Living Legends Award, acknowledging Territory nurses/midwives who have worked in the Territory for more than 20 years
  • Graduate of the Year Award, which encourages and recognises those who have been in the profession for 12 months or less

The awards are open to all nurses and midwives who hold a current practising certificate with the Nurses and Midwifery Board of the NT and who are currently employed within the NT at the time of nomination.

Nominations are made by the general public or members of the health and community services industry. Nominations of or by nurses and midwives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin are encouraged. Winners are selected by a committee of community and professional representatives and receive $500. The Northern Territory Nurse or Midwife of the year is chosen from among the five winners and awarded a further $2000.

In 2005 the selection committee received 83 nominations, which is a significant increase on the 56 nominations received in 2004.
