Recognition of Registration

Mutual recognition laws provide for recognition of qualifications across State and Territory boundaries. This means that you could also apply to work in other Australian States or Territories with a minimum of paperwork, however payment of separate registration fees with the relevant Nursing Board would be required. Mutual recognition also applies between Australia and New Zealand.

Registered Nurses who have undertaken their initial nursing education in the following countries are eligible for immediate registration if they meet English language competency. They must also meet recency of practice provisions (that is they must have worked as a nurse in the preceeding 5 years):

  • United Kingdom
  • Republic of Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • United States of America

English language competency applies to the following countries:

  • Republic of South Africa
  • Zimbabwe
  • Quebec (Canada)
  • Singapore
  • Hong Kong
  • Netherlands (English language competency applies and must have obtained qualification in the Higher Vocational Education sector)

Registered Nurses who have obtained their initial nursing education from any country not listed above, and all Enrolled Nurses who have been educated overseas, should contact the Nursing and Midwifery Board of the Northern Territory for registration advice.

Migration

Any registered nurse who wishes to migrate to Australia must have their qualifications assessed by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council who is authorised under the Migration Act to undertake this assessment on behalf of the Department of Immigration, Migration and Indigenous Affairs.
