There’s no excuse for abuse
Zero Tolerance: Management of Aggression - Caring for our staff
The skilled and dedicated people who work for the Department of Health and Families (DHF) spend their lives caring for others.
Incidents of aggression against staff continue to be of great concern and DHF is determined to tackle this problem. While there is no single or simple solution to prevent aggression against staff, the Department has been working on several fronts to reduce the risk of aggression and to take effective action when it occurs.
DHF is committed to a policy of Aggression Zero Tolerance. Any form of threatening, aggressive or violent behaviour against staff will not be tolerated. This includes a firm commitment to anti-bullying.
A Project Consultant has been working with the Department and staff to develop key strategies to deal with aggression.
- The development of an Aggression Zero Tolerance policy to facilitate and support staff when reporting incidents of aggression to Police.
- Working with the Northern Territory Police and other government departments to facilitate an integrated and across-government approach to managing aggression.
- The development of a public information campaign – There’s no excuse for abuse – in partnership with the Australian Nursing Federation, to educate the public and patients that violence and abuse against staff are not acceptable. (Click the following links to preview our campaign posters, Poster 1 | Poster 2 | Poster 3 | Poster 4 | Poster 5.)
- The development of integrated NT wide Aggression Management Plans in key program areas. These plans include establishing procedures and identifying responsibilities for dealing with incidents of aggression
Identifying and delivering relevant training to give staff the confidence in how to cope with aggression effectively
