The National Review of Nursing Education to address nursing education in relation to health outcomes was conducted from June 2001 to March 2002. During this time the Secretariat consulted widely and many submissions were received. This resulted in the release of the Our Duty of Care report. http://www.dest.gov.au/archive/highered/nursing/pubs/duty_of_care/default.html
Thirty-six recommendations were tabled with an additional four critical care recommendations, seven midwifery recommendations and one mental health recommendation. http://www.healthworkforce.health.nsw.gov.au/amwac/ahwac/reports.html
From this, each jurisdiction has 19 recommendations to address.
The NT set up the Nurse Education Forum in August 2004 to address the recommendations, which are grouped into six categories:
- Entry requirements
- Professional development
- Change management
- Clinical Academics
- Critical Care: Quality (course only)
- Midwifery: Models of Care
The recommendations have been workshopped with representation from nurse educators within the Department of Health and Families, tertiary institutions, the Clinical Learning Team, the Nursing Certified Agreement Taskforce, other stakeholders and the private sector.
