The Office of the Principal Nursing Adviser provides a leadership focus for Territory nurses and midwives. Drawing on the best evidence-based nursing practice from around Australia and the world, the Office aims to improve professional service delivery whether it is in the acute sector or in the bush.

As well as providing high level advice to the CEO and executive of the Department of Health and Families and NT Government, the Principal Nurse Adviser identifies strategic workforce initiatives for service delivery and enhances clinical learning resources.

Another important aspect of the Office is to draw together the variety of services that employ nurses and midwives to encourage collaboration and sharing of experience and expertise. It also provides a pivotal link between the Department, as the largest employer of nurses and midwives, and the tertiary education sector through Charles Darwin University.

Given that nurses and midwives are the largest professional group in health services in the Territory, the Office makes a significant contribution to core services and excellence in their delivery.
