Tennant Creek

Tennant Creek, the centre for the Barkly Region, is on the Stuart Highway 500 km north of Alice Springs and 1000 km south of Darwin.

The town has a golden heritage. The quest for gold is a key element of Tennant Creek's history, and major mining companies continue to explore for gold and copper prospects around the area. Tennant Creek is also at the centre of the rich pastoral industry of central Australia.

The people of Tennant Creek enjoy modern facilities including reserves, sporting venues, galleries, a civic hall and library. It’s also home to Australia’s premier go-karting event, held on a street circuit through the town.

Aboriginal people are an important part of the multicultural community of Tennant Creek, and continue to maintain their identity and traditions. Local artists produce artefacts, crafts and paintings, which are available from outlets in Tennant Creek.

The Devil's Marbles, a national conservation reserve south of Tennant Creek, is one of the Territory's most photographed features and is a great place to camp and experience a real outback sunset.
