Gove (Nhulunbuy)

Gove (Nhulunbuy), a working town supporting the Alcan Gove mining operations, has been blessed with a perfect location: it's set on the Gove Peninsula, right on the Arafura Sea, with pristine wilderness areas just a stone's throw away.

It’s a heaven for sailors, anglers and four-wheel drive excursions to pristine beach and wilderness areas.

The town provides well-developed educational, social, health, sporting, cultural and shopping facilities for its residents as well as the Aboriginal homeland communities of East Arnhem land.

Local attractions include the Yirrkala Arts and Crafts Museum and the Nambara Arts and Crafts Centre. These are places where you can really appreciate the power of Aboriginal culture.

The Gove Peninsula is home to the Yolngu people, who celebrate and share their cultural inheritance annually with the Garma Festival. The world-renowned rock group Youth Yindi also call the area home.

Population: 3800 approx

Climate: The dry season (May to October) brings cool nights and fine dry days, the wet season is humid and hot with frequent showers and storms.

Shopping: Two supermarkets, clothing and other specialty shops and retailers.

Education: Government-run preschool, primary and high school, Christian school, training and university courses available.

Health: Gove District Hospital, a private medical centre, general practitioners, dental services and health professionals.

Transport: Linked to Darwin by the Bulman Track (700 km gravel) and the sealed Stuart Highway. Suitable only for four wheel drive vehicles and only during the dry season. It is necessary to carry fuel. Nhulunbuy is on Aboriginal land. Tourists, travellers and people visiting family or friends in communities need a recreation or road-transit permit. Permits should be obtained from Northern Land Council. Daily flights to Cairns and Darwin.

Housing: Alcan Gove subsidies housing for its employees. NT housing provides accommodation for key government employees. There is limited private property to buy or rent.

Media: Television stations are ABC, Channel Seven Central, SBS, Imparja. ABC radio and local FM community station. The Arafura Times is published weekly, the NT News and interstate papers are also available.
