Post Graduate Programs
Post graduate study is encouraged, supported and valued as contributing to clinical practice, management and leadership in nursing. Development of nurses in their career pathways is fostered through a partnership with Charles Darwin University, Flinders University, Menzies School of Health and the Centre for Remote Health.
Post Graduate scholarship funding is advertised in February each year for the following year.

Professional Development Services
Department of Health and Families (DHF) has a number of strategies in place to support nurses in their professional development. In recognition of the need for nurses to participate in professional development activities the NT Public Sector Nurses 2003 - 2006 Certified Agreement provides for financial assistance for nurses who have worked continuously in excess of 12 months for DHF.
The amounts are:
- $300 per annum for nurses working continuously for DHCS in excess of one year but less than five years as at 30 August 2001: and
- $600 per annum for nurses working continuously for DHCS in excess of five years as at 30 August 2001
DHF encourages and supports professional development and believes it is vital to keep our employees up to date and motivated. We can help you gain further skills in your chosen field or offer the flexibility to try something different.
There are also wide ranging opportunities for professional development. Royal Darwin Hospital and Alice Springs Hospital are affiliated with the Flinders University School of Nursing and Midwifery, the Centre for Remote Health and the Charles Darwin University.
People and Organisational Learning are available in all regional centres with nursing and other educators providing clinical support, professional development and continuing education for nurses, health professionals, Aboriginal Health Workers and non clinical staff. Through these centres, DHF staff are offered learning opportunities to meet their clinical and professional development needs.
An annual program of short courses addresses learning needs identified by staff to maintain an exceptional standard of nursing practice across hospital, community and remote area nursing practice. Approximately 30 different courses are run regularly throughout the year with an Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Program and orientation programs conducted for all staff on commencement.
