Statement - Shipping Containers for Remote Safe Houses
Friday 11 April 2008
The Department of Health and Community Services is utilising converted shipping containers to construct new safe houses in remote communities, however as yet none are in use.
The Safe House conversions are still under construction and therefore not in use.
Unlike the Intervention containers with identified problems, the Safe Houses are being fitted out entirely in Darwin using local contractors and materials, and thereby it is unlikely that these containers will experience the same issues as the affected containers.
However, all Safe House shipping containers will be tested to ensure there is no risk of formaldehyde odour or health risks as part of the Commonwealth's testing program.
The Department of Health and Community Services is communicating with the Federal Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs and awaiting advice on the Commonwealth Medical Officer's assessment of risk.
