Royal Darwin Hospital is accredited under the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) - a private non-profit independent organisation formed by representatives from the Victorian Branch of the Australian Hospitals Association and the NSW branch of the Australian Medical Association in 1974.

The ACHS was established because there was a need to formalise systems within hospitals, in three main areas - they being in hospital accreditation, credentialling of medical staff and the assuring and improving of quality in care and services.

By gaining ACHS accreditation Royal Darwin Hospital has demonstrated to its patients its commitment to continuing quality improvement. Patients have the assurance that RDH has complied with the exacting standards laid down by the ACHS.

In addition to the ACHS accreditation, different parts of Royal Darwin Hospital have received accreditation from professional associations in their fields.

Emergency Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for advanced training (ie to train specialists in emergency medicine).

Paediatrics

The Department of Paediatrics is also accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. This accreditation was upgraded in 2001 to two years for basic paediatric training, including six months in community paediatrics.

Intensive Care
The Intensive Care Unit received accreditation in 1998 from the Faculty of Intensive Care of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. This means the Unit is recognised as a training unit for doctors specialising in Intensive Care.

Anaesthetics
The Anaesthetic Department is accredited for training of anaesthetic specialists by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.

Pathology
Royal Darwin Hospital's Pathology Department as a whole - and its individual sections - is accredited under National Association of Testing Authorities. This is a national accreditation which shows that the Department is above the national standard in pathology testing.
