The Department of Health and Community Services employs Aboriginal Health Workers in many areas, including at Royal Darwin Hospital.

At RDH the Health Workers assist in educating indigenous patients about their treatment and procedures, gaining informed consent for surgery, tests and procedures, explaining the ramifications on non-compliance with treatments and with communication problems which may exist between medical staff and patients.

Their role helps ensure that treatment provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients is culturally appropriate.
