WHO MAY RECEIVE PUBLIC HOSPITAL SERVICES WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY?
All Australian residents are eligible under Medicare to receive public hospital
services without having to pay.
Visitors from countries which have signed reciprocal health care agreements with
Australia are also eligible. For information about the countries with these agreements,
phone Medicare on 13 20 11.
Even if you have private health insurance you may choose to be a public patient in a
public hospital. In some circumstances, you may also be admitted as a public patient in a
private hospital if a public hospital has made special arrangements.
