Hospital Services is the funder of acute care services in the Northern Territory.
Historically, Hospital Services funds health care that has required the infrastructure,
technology and professional expertise of the hospital environment. Public hospitals
in the Territory provide a range of services from primary screening and prevention
to acute and chronic care. Territorians have local access to a comprehensive
range of acute care services that contribute positively to their overall health
and well being. Five public hospitals, located in Darwin, Alice Springs,
Nhulunbuy (Gove), Katherine and Tennant Creek form a network throughout the Territory.
In total there are 570 public hospital beds in the Territory. Future scope of
acute care services is not limited to the parameters of the public hospital environment
and partnerships are currently being developed with Private service providers. Largely
due to the remoteness, scattered population and the absence of alternative health
care providers, Northern Territory public hospitals have had to provide numerous
non acute services to their communities. As health service infrastructure develops
beyond hospitals, there will be less need for hospitals to be involved in non
acute areas. Health service agreements have assisted in defining the role and
services to be provided. The Acute Care program operates within the
parameters of the following legislation: |
