available positions

I am always willing to hear from doctors who may be interested in working in paediatrics in Alice Springs, especially at registrar (or SHO) level. We may a vacancy coming up even if it has not been advertised yet.

The work here in Central Australia is amazing. Who would have thought that we would be looking after such sick kids in a Western country now?

The cultural diversity of Central Australia makes for health care challenges which confront Western views of health and sickness. For example, to some here the intimate spiritual connection to the land is an integral part of health and well-being.

Combine the above with a fantastic outdoors lifestyle (camping/ waterholes/ bush barbecues/ cycling etc.) - my family and I could not ask for anything better.

The following are positions available at Alice Springs Department of Paediatrics:

paediatric registrar

The work environment is friendly and relaxed with good consultant cover and 3 hours of dedicated paediatric teaching per week. The clinical exposure is broad, with emergencies, retrievals and interhospital transfers, general paediatrics, infectious diseases, special care nursery and neonatal resuscitation commonly encountered. We commonly care for patients on our ward who would probably be admitted to a paediatric ICU elsewhere.

We are always looking to recruit registrars in paediatrics to commence late January or occasionally late July of each year, generally for at least 12 months. The roster is 1:5 to 1:6 with excellent consultant cover. We have had registrars here complete RACP approved terms in community, rural, acute and infectious diseases paediatrics.

We have 6 paediatric registrars, 4 RMOs, and 5 consultants

This is a unique opportunity due to the diversity and severity of paediatric illness in central Australia, combined with an excellent team and resources.

FRACP or equivalent; eligibility to register as a specialist with the NT Medical Board; and interest in the health of indigenous children

Desirable:
MPH or other higher degree; interest in the health of children in developing countries; ability to take a leadership role in improving child health in Central Australia.
