ward profiles

Surgical Unit | Day Surgery | Intensive Care Unit | Operating Theatres | Chilren's Ward | Maternity Ward | Special Care Nursery | Outpatient and Specialist Clinics | Medical Ward | Emergency Department | Renal Services | Paediatrics Department

surgical unit

This 30-bed unit manages all major surgical specialities. Visiting specialists include Urology, Plastics, and Vascular. Admissions to the unit include trauma cases and elective surgery. Standard Care Protocols are being implemented to assist with quality patient care.

day surgery

This unit is currently undergoing redevelopment. On completion the Day Surgery will have 18 chairs, for use morning and afternoon. Along with Elective Surgery procedures and minor operations the unit caters for Endoscopy, Chemotherapy and medical procedures.

intensive care unit

This unit is undergoing redevelopment. On the completion the unit will have 6 ICU and 4 HDU beds. This unit caters for all age groups from neonate through to Adults, and covers all patients with increased activity needing specialist care.

operating theatres

This operating suite is currently undergoing redevelopment. On completion the suite will have 3 theatres, operating 7 days per week. Staff cover oncall on a rotating basis.

children's ward

We move into the new Children's Ward on the ground floor in late July 2001. This ward has a 30-45 bed capacity and is linked with a Paediatric Outreach and Outpatient Service.

The Paediatric Unit comprises an effective multidisciplinary team of nurses, medical officers and ancillary staff.

This team has demonstrably already achieved results in improving health outcomes for children in Central Australia and now you are invited to be part of the continuing work in this specialty where there is great need and also great potential for making a difference.

maternity unit

Recently relocated into lovely new premises, this16 bed unit incorporates antenatal clinics, antenatal, delivery (four well fitted delivery rooms with their own ensuites), and postnatal services.

A trainee Aboriginal Health Worker has joined the team to fulfil an important cross-cultural role.

A Registered Midwife Graduate program is in place for 2001, facilitated by the Maternal & Infant Health Educator.

special care nursery

This Level 2 Care 8 cot Nursery in lovely new premises has capacity to expand to 17cots. New staff follow a formal self-directed orientation program and there is also the opportunity to undertake advanced neonatal education courses.

outpatient & specialist clinics

These clinics cover the full spectrum of general and specialist services Monday to Friday and are well equipped with recent technology and experienced staff. Moving into new premises in early 2002.

medical ward

The incidence of chronic diseases in Central Australia is 6 - 20 times the national average and the admissions to the Medical Ward reflect that.

The Medical Ward is currently under redevelopment and will shortly have the capacity to accommodate 47 medical patients. The redeveloped Ward will include 4 sites for haemodialysis, 2 palliative care beds and a rehabilitation room.

emergency department

A Fellow of the Australian College of Emergency Medicine was appointed medical head of the Emergency Department in February 2000 and the Department was accredited in August.

The Department is the main receiving unit for Central Australia and averages 32,000 episodes of service per year. Top of Page

renal services

Renal Services is located on the Community Health campus, approx 6 kms away from the Hospital campus. Renal Services includes Outreach, Haemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis and Renal Transplant services. The Haemodialysis Unit has the

capacity to accommodate 104 clients and uses the Fresenius machines. A Renal Physician and Renal Registrar are located on site.
