The Department of Health and Community Services operates the Aerial
Medical Services in the Top End of the Northern Territory, and funds
the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) to provide this service in
Central Australia. Aerial Medical services provided include:
- 24 hour emergency evacuation from remote areas of the NT
- 24 hour medical consultation service to remote and isolated
individuals in the Top End
- Routine medical and nursing visits to remote communities in
the Top End
- Medical services to oil rigs in the Timor Sea, ships at sea
and occasionally to parts of South East Asia.
In the Top End people requiring assistance in case of serious injury
or illness can contact the Aerial Medical Service through FJY Outpost
Radio Network provided by St John Ambulance or through the switchboard
of the nearest hospital.
In Central Australia the RFDS maintains a radio network covering
cattle properties, mining camps and bus communities.
At times the Aerial Medical Service use boats, helicopters and
four wheel drive vehicles to perform evacuations in the most efficient
manner.
