will there be signs so I know where I can and can't smoke?

yes!

  • All restaurants, cafes and dining areas will be required to display signage consistent with the regulations from 1 January 2003.
  • All eating places will be sent a standard No Smoking sign by 1 January.
  • Businesses will have the option of designing and producing their own No Smoking signs, providing they comply with the regulations.
  • Outdoor venues where seating is provided will also have signs to distinguish smoking areas from nonsmoking areas.
  • For an occupier who breaches the No Smoking signage requirements, a $100 infringement notice may result, or a fine of up to $11,000 if the offence is proven in court.
  • In places where smoking is allowed, the business may communicate the smoking area in whatever way they consider appropriate.
