shops

where is smoking not permitted?

  • All shops, shopping centres, plazas and malls that are enclosed are smokefree from 1 January 2003.
  • Car parks that are enclosed, are nonsmoking from 1 January 2003.
  • Within 2 metres of the entrances to enclosed shops, shopping centres, plazas, malls and car parks are also nonsmoking.
  • If there is an enclosed entrance to the door of the area, the 2 metre law applies from where the enclosed entrance starts.
  • Thoroughfares (includes corridors, stairways, foyers and lobbies) and service/amenity areas (such as toilets, shower blocks, changing rooms and waiting areas) are nonsmoking from 1 January 2003.

exceptions

  • Areas not accessible to the public such as shop back rooms and staff rooms will also be nonsmoking from 31 May 2003 (although some shopping centres already have smokefree policies in place that apply to these areas).

Remember: If an enclosed area is used by the public to move to another area, or to access a service or amenity, it is a nonsmoking area from 1 January 2003.
