outdoor public venues

where is smoking not permitted?

  • In outdoor public venues where seating is provided, a minimum 50% of seating must be nonsmoking from 1 January 2003.
  • The best way to do this would be to designate large blocks of seating as smoking or nonsmoking. The nonsmoking areas must be equally attractive and provide the same type of service or 'amenity' as the smoking areas.
  • This includes sporting stadiums, grandstands, outdoor theatres, racetracks and showgrounds.
  • Signage must be displayed to assist patrons in identifying smoking areas from nonsmoking areas.
  • Thoroughfares (includes corridors, stairways, foyers and lobbies) and service/amenity areas (such as toilets, shower blocks, changing rooms and waiting areas) are nonsmoking from 1 January 2003.
  • Enclosed dining and food service areas at the venue will all be nonsmoking.

exceptions

  • Smoking may be allowed on embankments or hill areas used by audiences but where seating is not provided.
