rooms in group accommodationwhere is smoking not permitted?- Common
use areas of group accommodation are nonsmoking from 1 January 2003.
- This
rule applies to nursing homes, retirement villages, hostels, and hotels.
- Common
use areas include areas such as communal lounge rooms, recreation or games rooms
and shared bathrooms.
- Thoroughfares (includes corridors, stairways,
foyers and lobbies) and service/amenity areas (such as toilets, shower blocks,
changing rooms and waiting areas) are nonsmoking from 1 January 2003.
- Food
service areas including dining areas are nonsmoking.
- Staff rooms and
other enclosed areas not accessible to the public are nonsmoking from 31 May 2003.
exceptions-
Smoking may still be permitted in private rooms depending on the policy of the
venue. In places such as nursing homes, policies should be put in place to protect
staff. For example, smoking in private rooms should not be permitted whilst staff
are present.
- Verandahs and outdoor areas such as courtyards may still
allow smoking depending on the policy of the venue.
- Guest accommodation
venues do not need to designate a certain percentage of private rooms as nonsmoking.
