family and children's services

The Family and Children's Services (FACS) Program administers Northern Territory and Commonwealth funding to purchase and provide a range of services that address issues such as the protection and care of children and the improvement of individual and family well being.

These may be categorised as a continuum of services; that assist families cope with normal parenting, social and economic pressure, that support families and individuals deal with crises and services that protect and care for children who are no longer able to stay at home with their natural parents.

The program funds non government, private and internal Department of Health and Community Services (DHCS) providers to delivery these services to the community.

Internally support and intervention services (eg. child protection, out of home care and family counselling) are delivered through staff located in offices in the major Territory centres. The larger rural and remote communities are visited by FACS staff on a regular basis, and smaller communities are visited as needed.

FACS has identified 5 Strategic Directions to help prioritise funding and action in the future. These are:

Direction 1: Enhance the capacity of individuals, families and communities to improve their well-being.

Direction 2: Strengthen the ability of individuals and families to successfully manage stresses that impact on their well being.

Direction 3: Support children and young people where families are not fulfilling their caring responsibilities.

Direction 4: Ensure that organisational infrastructure and management systems within FACS facilitate and support the achievement of program outcomes.

Direction 5: Develop relevant partnerships to improve the well-being of Territory families and children

  • Family Support Services
