The Supported Accommodation Assistance Program was established in 1985 as a joint Commonwealth, State and Territory initiative. There have been three five-year agreements and the fourth Agreement, SAAP IV,was signed in mid 2000.  The Northern Territory Government and the Commonwealth Government provide $7.1 million each year to Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) services in the Northern Territory. There is a range of services available to meet the needs of the diverse client group including services for young people, women and children escaping domestic violence, single adults and families.

SAAP is administered through the Family and Children's Services (FACS) Program in Department of Health and Community Services (DHCS). FACS hosts a range of other activities related to children's services, family support and the Aboriginal Family Violence Strategy, which creates opportunities for linking activities across the program.
