Improving Aboriginal health as part of efforts to overcome Aboriginal disadvantage more generally, poses the greatest single challenge to the Northern Territory and its health care system. It is widely recognised that tackling the underlying causes of Aboriginal health problems holistically, and providing health services within a primary health care framework are the most appropriate community and health sector responses to the Aboriginal health problem.

Northern Territory Aboriginal Health Key Performance Indicator Information System (AHKPI)

The AHKPI project is an exciting collaboration between the Northern Territory Aboriginal Health Forum (AHF) partners (The Commonwealth Department of Health and Aging (DoHA), the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance (AMSANT) and Northern Territory Department of Health and Community Services (DHCS)) to develop a Northern Territory wide Primary Health Care performance reporting system.

The impetus for this project resulted from the endorsement by the AHF of a preliminary suite of performance indicators that requires a NT wide health jurisdiction system and processes to be developed for capturing and measuring primary health care data consistently across the variety of NT remote Primary Health Care service providers.

As a result of the implementation of this project, the Northern Territory will become the first jurisdiction in Australia to report on Agreed Performance Indicators in relation to Primary Health Care.
