The Darwin Wharf Precinct
was conceived in 1990 when part of an old warehouse on Stokes
Hill Wharf was transformed into a seafood restaurant. The
Northern Territory Government’s redevelopment plan of
1991 aimed to introduce a waterfront tourism and recreational
area to complement the Darwin CBD and to improve facilities
for visiting cruiseships, pleasurecraft and naval vessels.
The redeveloped Precinct was officially opened in May 1992
and has expanded rapidly over the years. Today it is home
to a variety of eateries and retail outlets; an award-winning
seafood restaurant; an annual seafood festival; regular live
entertainment; a choice of harbour cruises and fishing charters;
artificial reefs for recreational fishermen; and a function
centre boasting panoramic views over Darwin Harbour. |
