Why Your Cruise Ship Should
Come to Darwin

The many advantages of using the Port of Darwin include:

  • The foremost deep water port in the north of Australia, with a year-round tropical climate.
  • Darwin is the most northern tropical capital of Australia. Its convenient location as a major gateway means that sailing time between South East Asia and Australia is just a few days.
  • Our management and planning is second-to-none. Shipping Agents, Port Authority officials, Darwin City Traders, NT Tourist Commission, local tour operators and the Darwin Regional Tourism Association have all joined together to form a special Cruise Ship Committee. This Committee provides a free shuttle bus service to the CBD, and co-ordinates all welcome and departure activities, as well as dealing with any special requirements requested by your own cruise executives.
  • Visiting vessels normally berth on Stokes Hill Wharf, within the new Darwin Wharf Precinct. This is an exciting new eating, entertainment and recreational area, rich in history and providing a perfect vantage point for our spectacular sunsets.
  • Arcades of cosmopolitan food shops jostle side-by-side with the old Melbourne tram eateries, a seafood restaurant and al fresco cafe. Also included are: a souvenir shop, a local tours agent, and a pearl outlet where beautiful, locally produced pearls are available at direct prices.
  • At the entrance to Stokes Hill Wharf is the Australian Pearling Exhibition, a world-class attraction that takes you through the history of pearling. Adjoining this, Indo-Pacific Marine boasts a fascinating display of living coral reef and mangrove habitats.
  • For something more invigorating, follow the historic walking trails, visit a scenic lookout, tour the World War II oil storage tunnels, or see the entire panorama of Darwin from a thrilling helicopter flight.
  • Only minutes from the Central Business District, Darwin International Airport offers daily international or interstate flights. Scenic flights over Kakadu National Park may also be arranged.
  • Apart from Darwin as a major port of call, the Northern Territory also offers the contrast of pristine Seven Spirit Bay and the beautiful Gove Peninsula. Cruise ships, large and small, are welcome to call in at these unique destinations when on their way to or from Australia's east coast ports.
  • The wharf is a concrete decked steel piled wharf with a trestle approach. The berth is 292m long and has a least depth of 9m. The height of the wharf above datum is 10.6m. A second wharf with a length of 300m and least depth of 11m lies adjacent to Stokes Hill Wharf.
  • Pilotage services are available 24 hours per day.
  • Excellent quality water is available at approx. 100 tonnes per hour.
  • Shore power 3 phase, 415V ac 65A per connection is available.
  • Full range of maintenance and mechanical services are available in the close proximity of the wharf area.
  • Providores / Ships Chandlers located 'on-site'.
  • Easy access to the Central Business District of Darwin which is only 1 km from Stokes Hill Wharf.
  • Full hospital / medical facilities available 24 hours per day.

Why Your Passengers Would Like to Come to Darwin

  • The locals would love to meet them! The Northern Territory is huge - two and a half times the size of Texas, but with a population of only 171,000. Territorians really look forward to welcoming visitors.
  • The Territory is a land of incredible contrast. From sunbaked arid regions to lush tropical rainforests, yet every day is a summer's day.
  • Darwin and the "Top End" of Australia reflect a unique aboriginal history and culture that dates back for thousands of years.
  • Our wildlife is rare and fascinating, with many indigenous species. You can discover the wonders of the Territory Wildlife Park, explore the bewitching waterfalls at Litchfield, or visit the Darwin Crocodile Farm and see the Northern Territory's largest crocodile in captivity.
  • Darwin is a thriving modern city on the edge of a magnificent harbour, all steeped with history from the HMS Beagle's first landing in 1839 to the Japanese bombing of Darwin in World War II.
  • Our tours are world-renowned and range from visits to the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park in Arnhem Land, rich in cultural heritage, right through to the Jumping Croc Cruises.
  • For those with limited time, we offer short tours in and around Darwin itself. The East Point Reserve and Military Museum, the Aviation Heritage Centre, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, the Casino, historic Fannie Bay Goal, Fish Feeding at Doctors Gully and the Crodylus Park Research and Education Centre are all very popular.
  • Just minutes from the wharf, there is also a choice of private plane and helicopter charter companies.
  • Darwin's proximity to Asia is a major influence on Darwin cuisine and culture and our open air food markets and many restaurants provide a really different taste experience.
  • As the weather is always warm, Darwin favours swimming, water sports and outdoor activities.
  • Recreational fishing is one of the most popular pastimes for both locals and visitors. On the reefs you can catch Golden Snapper, Black Jewfish, Saddletail Snapper, Red-finned and Red Emperor, Estuarine Rock Cod, Coral Trout, Moonfish, Mangrove Jack and Bream. Tailored fishing tours can be arranged by experienced fishing guides to catch that famous Territory Barramundi.
