NTG Trade Objectives 2002-2007

The Territory Government’s priorities for growing the new AustralAsia Trade Route are challenging but clear. The Government is committed to:

  • substantially growing the flow of international trade,
  • further strengthening the Territory’s international shipping connections,
  • leveraging new value-adding industries and employment opportunities, and
  • achieving positive economic outcomes for our regional centres.

The Northern Territory International Trade Strategy, Building Stronger Territory Trade, outlines the Government's strategic directions, actions and trade objectives to build and develop Northern Territory trade outcomes.

The Trade Strategy sets ambitious and targeted objectives to:

  • Lift the overall value and volume of Northern Territory non-oil exports by 40 percent;
  • Increase the number of Territory enterprises participating in or contributing to international trade by 25 percent;
  • Support knowledge-based export growth in at least two emerging sectors with the development of export plans;
  • Contribute to the expansion of the AustralAsia trade route and progressively achieve a landbridge trade of at least 50,000 containers or equivalent volume per year through the Port of Darwin; and
  • Maximise the value to the Territory economy and business from international investments in the Northern Territory and secure up to $2 billion in foreign direct investment.
