Remote Communication Services

In the major centres of Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, the communications infrastructure is on par with the rest of Australia with both terrestrial and satellite communications available. It is the aim of the Northern Territory Government to improve telecommunications in these areas.

To that end, the Communications section developed the Remote Area Telecommunications Strategy. (word document that requires downloading). This involved wide consultation with both industry and customers across the NT. It is a 'living' document that is reviewed annually to ensure that it is relevant and achievable, in light of technological advancements and changes in consumer needs.

Regional areas have broadband communications facilities but in some cases do not have the higher end facilities ,such as ADSL. Remote areas are only serviced by Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) services and satellite services. These provide less than satisfactory telecommunications.

To help identify areas in which economies of scale and economic viability established for telecommunications providers , the NTG commissioned an investigation and report by ACIL Tasman.(pdf format.)
