Initiatives and Projects
It is the aim of the Northern Territory Government to improve telecommunications in areas that are currently inadequately serviced. To that end, the Communications Section developed the Remote Area Telecommunications Strategy. (word document that requires downloading).
The programs that affect communications in the Northern Territory fall into three broad categories
The Commonwealth Government Rural Transaction Centres (RTC) Program provides funds to help small communities access services that urban people take for granted such as postal facilities bill paying, medicare. Rural Transaction Centres in the Northern Territory are located in Wadeye, Maningrida, Numbulwah and Mataranka.
Types of services available at the transaction Centres may include:
- Post, Phone, Fax, and Internet access
- Direct access to on-line Centrelink services and Medicare easyclaim as well as other Commonwealth, NTG and Local Government services
- Tourism, involvement in employment schemes
- Facilities for visiting professionals such as Taxation and Financial consultancy services
- Printing, Secretarial services and Insurance
