It is the aim of the Northern Territory Government to improve telecommunications in these areas. To that end, the Communications section developed the Remote Area Telecommunications Strategy. (word document that requires downloading).
Choosing the correct mobile phone for your locality in the Northern Territory is vitally important. Different technologies such as Next G, CDMA and GSM all have different coverage areas.
It is important to note that Telstra will be replacing CDMA services with NextG services from 1 January 2008. After that date CDMA will no longer be available. for further information please visit your provider's Web site or the Telstra Next G web site.
The Communications Section of DCIS plays a strategic role in getting all Territorians access to similar communications technologies and infrastructure within two years of their implementation in southern capitals. To help achieve this, the division actively lobbies the Federal Government on telecommunications issues and regularly has input to the policies formulated. Close consultation with Federal Government departments has resulted in Territory issues and initiatives being included at the grass roots level.
The Remote Telecommunications Forum represents the interests and views of the consumers of telecommunications services and products in remote areas of the Northern Territory. The Forum which is held every six months has been established to better coordinate the delivery and use of remote area telecommunications.
