PAY-TV in the Northern Territory is provided by AUSTAR via satellite and a cable network. AUSTAR broadcasts a variety of material from both their own network and the Foxtel consortium in both analogue and digital formats with the preferred medium being digital as this offers greater interactivity, better quality pictures and sound as well as an electronic program guide and interactive games.
Major sporting events such as cricket coverage, the Melbourne Cup and Wimbledon will be available to free to air broadcasters in the first instance. Anti syphoning provisions contained in the Broadcasting Services Act ensures the general public that this is the case. The anti-syphoning list is regularly reviewed by the federal government.
