The emphasis of this program is on providing Territorians the opportunity to gain a qualification through structured employment and training in the NT Public Sector.
The length of the program will depend on the discipline that the apprentice will undertake and can range from 12 months to 4 years. Employment is offered as a temporary contract, which includes both "on" and "off" the job training. "On" the job training is provided by the host agency that you will be placed with and "off" the job Training is delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), where in most cases you will attend one week per month.
2009 NT Public Sector Apprenticeships: APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN
Applications for the February 2009 intake of the NT Public Sector (NTPS) Apprenticeship Program are now being accepted.
There are over 130 apprenticeship opportunities being offered to people across the Northern Territory, and include such diverse qualifications as Automotive (Heavy Vehicle Road Transport), Business, Conservation and Land Management, Drilling (Water Well), Horticulture, Hospitality Operations, Information Technology, Laboratory Skills, Meetings and Events, Printing and Graphic Arts, Seafood, Tourism (Guiding), Captive Animals, and Indigenous Education Work.
Apprentices are employed by a Northern Territory Government department (or 'agency') on a temporary basis for the duration of their apprenticeship, which can range from 12 months to 4 years. Apprenticeships are offered on a full-time basis (i.e. generally Monday - Friday 8am - 4.21pm, except where offered as a School-Based apprenticeship where hours are negotiable between the student, school and workplace).
Apprentices are paid a salary whilst they remain in active training and employment; and the salary rate is dependent on the qualification being studied, highest level of schooling completed, and number of years since completion.
