The day-to-day management of an apprentice or trainee involves meeting legal requirements such as record keeping, reporting and adhering to the training plan.

It also involves:

  • ensuring your apprentice or trainee fully understands their rights and obligations
  • monitoring performance and progress
  • being aware of any issues or problems an apprentice or trainee may be experiencing in the workplace or during off-the-job training.

Apprenticeships and traineeships will run more smoothly if you and other staff provide:

  • adequate support and encouragement to the apprentice or trainee
  • opportunities for the apprentice or trainee to practise new skills under supervision.

Completing or cancelling an apprenticeship or traineeship

Apprenticeships and traineeships end when the training program is completed or if the training contract is cancelled. If you need advice or assistance during the apprenticeship or traineeship, contact Australian Apprenticeships NT.

Completion

The Registered Training Organisation (RTO) must confirm that the apprentice/trainee has received all the required on- and off-the-job training and successfully completed all units of competency to achieve the qualification. Once this has occurred the employer should contact Australian Apprenticeships NT to complete the apprenticeship.

Cancellation

If the apprentice or trainee is still within the stipulated probation period, the contract can be legally cancelled by either party, giving one week's notice.

After the probation period either party may request cancellation of the contract for reasons such as:

  • theft, assault or fraud on behalf of the apprentice
  • misconduct on behalf of the employer
  • apprentice's absence from work without consent
  • cessation of the business.

If you can reach a mutual and voluntary agreement to cancel the contract, both parties must complete and sign the required cancellation forms and forward them to Australian Apprenticeships NT.

Resolving a complaint

If you are not able to reach mutual agreement, the AANT will investigate the complaint and attempt to resolve it. In some instances the complaint will be referred by AANT to the Department of Business and Employment for action.

It is important that discussion between the parties takes place prior to cancellation.
