Strategy

As part of the Climate Change Policy, the Northern Territory Government approved the 'Greening the Fleet Strategy' which will result in a 20% reduction in the production of CO2 gas over the next five years.

The strategy requires that vehicles purchased by the NT Government must have a minimum Greenhouse rating of:

  • 7.5 for urban pool and passenger vehicles
  • 6.5 for vehicles allocated to executive contract officers
  • 5.5 for non four wheel drive light commercial vehicles
  • interim continuation of 3.5 for four wheel drive vehicles
  • mandatory minimum ANCAP safety rating of 4 stars will be adopted for all non-4WD passenger vehicles.

Refer to the Green Vehicle Guide for more information.

The whole of government target reduction in greenhouse gas is set at 7% per annum for the first two years. A review will be conducted early in year three to set targets for years three through to five. Annual agency targets will be negotiated as part of the overall target to reduce emissions over the next five years.

NT Fleet reports on progress against set targets to Government on an annual basis.

The selection of government plated vehicles will be made from a functional categories policy to ensure that appropriate fuel efficient vehicles are matched to operational needs. It is important that functional requirements are matched with operational needs.

Targets

Base data - 31 March 2009

Average production of greenhouse gas emissions based on current fleet profile as stated by manufacturers following their testing in accordance with ADR81/02 is: 257 gm/km.

The difference between actual and theoretical can be attributed to a number of factors including aggressive driving habits which increase fuel consumption and consequently production of CO2 gases; and/or lodgements of incorrect odometer readings when refuelling and non or partial use of the Government's common use fuel contract which collectively can impact on the accuracy of fuel related calculations.

The Northern Territory Government will investigate alternative fuels as they become available.

Whole of government target

The Greening the Fleet Strategy will be implemented in two stages.

Stage 1 is over two years with a target reduction of 14%. This equates to a reduction in the production of CO2 gases of 39 gm's/km resulting in an actual average of 239 gm/km after two years. A saving of 1850 tonnes of CO2.

Stage 2 covers the remaining three years with a further reduction of at least 6%. This equates to an additional saving of 17gm/km for an actual average of 221 gm/km for a total saving of 2640 tonnes of CO2 gas over the five years.
