Information Technology Services

The information technology services provided by Department of Business and Employment (DBE) to other government agencies encompasses five main areas - Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Policy and Strategy, Information Technology Service Management (ITSM), a Government Business Division - Data Centre Services, who manage and host mainframe and midrange applications, ICT Industry Development and Communications.

The ICT Policy and Strategy Unit develop and maintain ICT policies, standards and procedures for government. We also provide management of whole of government ICT strategies and projects, provide ICT security advice, approvals and incident response coordination, as well as management of the NTG internet and intranet websites.

IT Service Management (ITSM) provides NTG agencies with a fully managed IT service that includes the overseeing and reporting on services provided by contractors. We also provide advice on IT contract terms and conditions and on the integration of technology into business processes in accordance with whole of government policies and standards.

Each agency receives their IT services either through on-site personnel (for large agencies) or via an IT management team. The ITSM Contracts Management unit is located in Darwin and supports NTG agencies and IT managers in negotiations with service providers.

DBE operate the NT Government’s Data Centre. This service encompasses:

• A mainframe computing facility to host and provide processing capacity for government business systems including CICS, DB2, ADABAS and Natural applications.
• Managed server environments including Unix and Windows and a range of database systems including Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server.
• End to end utility computing services for NTG business applications including Virtual server infrastructure, centralised storage (SAN) and fully managed backup service.
• Hosting services for Web applications.
• A 24-hour monitored and managed server-hosting environment in the NTG Data Centre.

Data Centre infrastructure is accommodated in a secure industry standard facility that is fully managed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Data Centre operates as a Government Business Division (GBD) on a full cost recovery basis. The terms of this arrangement are set down in a GBD Charter of Operations.

ICT Industry Development

The NT Government and ICT Industry have established a partnership framework for Business and Government to develop sustainable strategies to grow the Northern Territory ICT Industry by creating benefits for all Territorians.
