About DBE

The Department of Business and Employment (DBE) represents the merging of vital government services and presents an opportunity to develop employment and business growth in the Northern Territory. Our Chief Executive is Dennis Bree and we have regional offices in several locations across the Territory. DBE can be divided into three core areas all committed to play a critical role in supporting the Government's priority of maintaining a strong, vibrant and growing Northern Territory economy.

Business Division

Our business divisions comprise core areas of Business and Industry Development and Business Support. The department is committed to working in partnership to support Northern Territory business and industry.

The division is committed to expanding the Territory's economic base by working with targeted industry sectors to identify new and additional opportunities for Territory businesses.

DBE manages the Business and skilled migration schemes in the Northern Territory.

Business Support provides linkages between Northern Territory business and Northern Territory and Australian government agencies to assist them with their dealings with any business issues and concerns.

Corporate and Information Services Division

The Corporate and Information Services Division (CIS) is the Northern Territory Government's shared services provider. We deliver corporate and information management services to all government agencies as well as a variety of services to the Territory community. We have regional offices in several locations across the Territory. Our division provides centralised management of nine key services, including: Accounting and Financial, Fleet, Human Resource, Information Technology, Printing, Procurement Policy, Property Leasing, and Records Services.

Our private sector customers include the business community for tendering of Northern Territory Government contracts and receiving government payments and people in the community seeking government employment and the broader community in areas concerning remote telecommunications, and the Information Communications Technology (ICT) industry.

Employment Division

The role of the Employment Division is to understand the employment needs of the Northern Territory and to develop and implement strategies to maximise job opportunities for all Territorians and to enable industry to access skilled workers.
Specifically, the Workforce NT Unit of the Employment Division:

  • undertakes labour market research and analysis
  • develops an annual Workforce NT Report
  • researches skill shortages
  • reviews and produces an annual NT Occupation Shortage List
  • liaises with industry of labour market issues
  • undertakes some labour market forecasting
  • provides labour market data on request.

The Employment Strategy Unit of the Employment Branch:

  • is responsible for leading the implementation of NT employment strategies e.g., Jobs Plan 3
  • plays a role in implementing national employment strategies for equity groups in the NT
  • has input into the development and implementation of NT industry strategies e.g., Indigenous Arts Strategy
  • provides strategic advice on employment matters to government
  • administers training and employment grants programs for equity groups.
